A gene can comes in different alternative forms. Remember in the part about genes that the base sequence of the DNA can change. These alternative forms of a gene are called alleles (singular: allele). For instance in the budgerigar two alleles are known for the spangle gene: the wild type (normal, not spangle) allele and the spangle allele.
